The 20-year-old rising star in Taiwan professional tennis also recently broke into the top 100 of the ATP singles world ranking. Here are four things to know about him

The press’ nickname for him

Chun-hsin Tseng, who’s also known as Jason Tseng, is often referred to as the “Night Market Champion” by the Taiwanese media. The moniker came about as his parents used to run a store in Taipei that sold tanghulu, a popular traditional Chinese candied snack, in order to support his tennis career.

Tseng began playing the sport at five years old with his father, before enrolling in the famed Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in France when he turned 13. The Academy was founded by Patrick Mouratoglou, who was Serena Williams’ coach from 2012 to 2022.

He won his first singles title at 14

In 2015, Tseng won his very first singles title at Les Petits As, a junior tennis tournament for players between the ages of 12 and 14. He was also the first Asian to win the boys’ singles title.

The tournament has seen several of its champions, such as Rafael Nadal and Martina Hingis, go on to win Grand Slam titles over the years. And Tseng is on his way to following in their footsteps.

In 2018, he scored two Junior Grand Slam titles at the Roland-Garros (the French Open) and Wimbledon. That year, he also won his first ITF (International Tennis Federation) Futures event in Vietnam. During this time, he was ranked 444th in the world.

He has three ATP Challenger titles

In December 2021, Tseng obtained his first title at the Maia Open in Portugal, a tournament that is part of the ATP Challenger series, which is second to the prestigious ATP Tour.

This achievement made him the fourth Taiwanese player to score an ATP Challenger men’s single title, after Jimmy Wang, Jason Jung and Lu Yen-hsun. The victory also propelled the young athlete to no.188 on the world rankings.

Three months later, he took home his second ATP Challenger title at the Bengaluru Open, before scoring his third title two months after that at the Murcia Open in Spain.

He has entered the major leagues

In 2022, Tseng also made his debut at two Grand Slams—the first being the Australian Open, where he received a wildcard, an invitation that lets a player play in a tournament that they wouldn’t have otherwise been qualified for based on their current ranking.

He also made it into the French Open, where he went up against world no.57 João Sousa and lost.

At the time of publication, the 20-year-old ranks no.90 on the ATP singles world ranking, breaking into the top 100 for the first time in his career. This is up from his highest ranking of 251 in 2021.

He is currently also the third highest ranked player in Asia and the highest ranking Taiwanese player on the ATP tour.
