If you play Fortnite on PlayStation 4 and think about upgrading to PlayStation 5, our guide will help you with it. While both gaming consoles can run the videogame perfectly fine, they also have big differences. From framerate to graphical fidelity, you need to consider many factors before deciding to upgrade.
When Fortnite first came out in 2017, it was available on PS4 and PS4 Pro. These two gaming consoles are still great, and millions of gamers use them. However, PlayStation 5 is a much better system, and our guide will reveal the main differences between it and last-generation systems.
Fortnite PS4 vs. PS5 comparison – Graphics
The main difference between Fortnite on PS4 and PS5 is the graphical fidelity. While graphics look just fine on PlayStation 4, they are incredible on the current-generation system. Despite having a cartoonish style, Fortnite looks impressive, and you can get the most out of it on PlayStation 5.
While playing on PS5, you will notice many more details, such as realistic grass, better lighting, and higher-resolution textures. On top of this, the current-generation console supports Ray Tracing, which makes Fortnite look even more beautiful.
The image above shows what Fortnite looks like without (left) Ray-Tracing and with (right) it. As you can see, the game looks much brighter in the image on the right side. Ray-Tracing may not play a huge role in certain aspects of the game, but once you turn it on, you will mostly notice the difference in environment.

You can disable Ray-Tracing on PS5
If you’re not a big fan of Ray-Tracing, you can disable it by turning on the 120FPS mode on PlayStation 5. Turning off this setting will also affect other details, such as shadows and reflections.
When it comes to the Fortnite comparison on PS4 and PS5, we will also provide an example of details you get on these consoles. Keep in mind that these images were taken on the PC version of Fortnite, but they represent the quality you will get on old and current-generation consoles.
As you can see, the image on the right shows more details and is brighter. On top of it, the contrast is different, allowing you to see more details and some parts of the map that you usually wouldn’t be able to see.
PS5 has a higher Fortnite FPS than PS4
Besides impressive graphical details, you will also benefit from a higher framerate while playing Fortnite on PlayStation 5. By default, the videogame runs at 60 frames per second on the current-generation console, which is great. However, you can bump this all the way to 120 FPS.
To enable the 120 FPS mode in Fortnite, follow the steps:
- Launch game
- Open in-game settings
- Go to Video settings, the first tab
- Turn on the 120FPS mode
If you are unable to turn on the 120FPS Mode on PlayStation 5, you will need to go into your console’s settings and enable a Performance mode. Furthermore, make sure that your TV supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz. If this is not the case, you either won’t be able to play the game or you won’t see any difference.
Keep in mind, however, that graphics will be degraded once you enable the 120FPS Mode in Fortnite. The game will look brighter due to the lack of shadows, reflections will look slightly worse, and Ray-Tracing will be disabled.
Besides being able to reach 120 frames per second, PS5 also has a more consistent framerate in Fortnite than PS4. The older-generation gaming console is capable of reaching 60 FPS, but it struggles to keep the framerate consistent. Due to this, your framerate will sometimes go down to 30 or 40 FPS during intense gunfights that have many effects. PlayStation 5, on the other hand, will be more consistent with 60 FPS, and in the 120FPS Mode, it shouldn’t go under 100 frames per second.
Should I upgrade to PS5 to play Fortnite?
In addition to the amazing details and a much higher framerate, PlayStation 5 also has shorter loading times, which is a big advantage. Once you select Fortnite on your home screen, the game will launch in only a couple of seconds, and you’ll be able to get into a match much faster.
However, should you upgrade to PS5 only to play Fortnite? The answer depends entirely on you. If your PlayStation 4 is in good condition and runs the game smoothly, you may not gain a lot by upgrading. However, if your current console is having issues running Fortnite, and you want a smooth gameplay experience, you should look to upgrade it soon.
If you are a player who cares about the visual aspect of Fortnite, we recommend you upgrade your PS4 to PS5. Our images above may show a subtle difference between the two versions of the game, but once you start playing Fortnite on PS5, you will no longer want to go back to the older console.
